SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Media Relations will contribute to the overall visibility of Greenpeace USA by developing creative, cutting-edge media strategies and overseeing their execution. The Director will work to increase visibility in the national news media, including print, broadcast and online news outlets, and in select local media for strategic campaign purposes.

The Director of Media Relations has overall responsibility for ensuring the integration of national media strategies with campaigning and other organizational goals and with other Communications Department programs. The Director oversees all Media Officers, consultants and public relations agencies and will supervise with an emphasis on workload prioritization, skills building and ensuring coordination with key staff. This position is also responsible for developing media program budgets and for monitoring expenditures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Work closely with organization leadership to help guide and realize an expanded presence in the news media.

- Oversee development of media strategies, objectives and plans, working closely with the Director of Communications. Participate in the development of the organization’s overarching communications strategy
- Manage the media team, which includes staff in multiple offices. Ensure that the media team plays a leadership role in the development of key project, campaign and organizational messaging, and ensure consistency in external messaging.
- Ensure communications and coordination between the media department and the Director of Communications, other Communications departments, Senior Management Team, and the Campaigns, Actions, and Development departments.
- Develop and maintain media monitoring systems and analysis.
- Manage key communications with internal and external project stakeholders including Greenpeace International, Greenpeace national/regional offices (NROs) and external project agencies and consultants.
- Develop effective project reporting and evaluation mechanisms.
- Apprise Director of Communications and Executive Director on potential and imminent public relations crises and, working closely with Communications Director, help manage media crises and public statements on litigation and other sensitive issues.

- Serve as organization spokesperson when required.

- Develop strategy for working with online news media, in conjunction with the online communications team.

- Write statements, op-eds and other materials and rigorously edit all public statements and news releases.
- Develop and manage the budget of the media department and monitor expenses.

- Ensure that press lists are updated regularly.

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS:

BA in English, journalism, communications, or related field; minimum 7 years related experience required. Knowledge of and/or passion for environmental issues. Demonstrated leadership ability to deliver on departmental and organizational goals. Excellent writing, editing and computer skills required.
